the important faqs
What is a doula?
A doula is a woman who provides continual support to a mother and family during labor. This person can bring support in several different ways - through information, physical support, and by being a listener and providing emotional reassurances and encouragement.
How do doulas interact with partners and other family members? Doulas are not there to replace any of the important presences in your life. Doulas are trained and sensitive to supporting the entire family. There is no way that a doula can replace the presence of a loving individual and that is not their role - and that is a strength actually. Having a continual presence at your labor that is calm, knowledgeable and caring who has seen birth before and can support, encourage, and reassure both parents can be an incredible help.
What do doulas NOT do? It is important to understand also what tasks doulas do not do. A doula is not trained as a medical professional (also arguably a strength of their role) and will not do physical assessments or exams. Nor will they make any medical decisions for a family. Their role with regard to decision making is to act as a sounding board and as an advocate for information from trained medical professionals.
